I know that the joy of the Ent is its simplicity but why on earth can't we have a fly-away jib stick (I think that is what it is!!) as seen working very effectively on this Snipe on Youtube?
It looks simple and I assume it could be easily fitted to any Ent at a modest cost.
Its all very well for those that have the same regular crew week in and week out but it would be a Godsend on a breezy Sunday morning in January sailing with an inexperienced crew.
I will willingly accept any answer except it would detract from the skill level required.
Great video clip - I'd never realised that was how a flyaway jibstick worked!
My answer to your question would be: "It would detract from the skill..." - oh, all right then, if I can't use that reply, how about "It would change the essential character of the Enterprise"?
It seems to me there are all sorts of improvements that could be made to the Ent, and no clear way of deciding which would be acceptable and which not. The most important thing for me is not to get seduced into making 'improvements' to compete with other classes, such that the Ent's character is diluted.
I've got to say that we curse our Ent jibsticks routinely, as my crew struggles to spike the clew or find the mast eye, but that is a part of the Ent experience. And it does add another required skill to the armoury a successful pairing needs - which rather brings us back to square one...
If there is an improvement you think should be adopted then just submit a proposal to the AGM. If sufficient members agree you could be using one legally next year.
It seems I am not the only one who thinks that a fly-away jib stick would be a good idea after all. I see from the Enterprise Association website that they can now be used in club and some open meetings but not yet in some of the larger national events.
All I need to do now is to work out how to make the changes required so that they are easily reversible for those events where they are not permitted.
