I have just bought a wooden Enterprise 18324. The hull is in good condition but the last owner had painted it with a brush and it is covered in paint runs. There is also very slight peeling along the centre plank where it has had a knock. When I sand the paint, some of the primer shows through because the primer has runs in it as well! What I want to know is - can I remove the small area of peeling paint and prime it, then roller Toplac over the sanded hull without stripping it all? Or should I use an undercoat first? Any help or suggestions really appreciated.

You should remove any peeling paint and sand it down to give a smooth finish. If you are then back to wood in places you need to prime it with undercoat before overpainting with Toplac. You made need to build up that area with extra layers to get to the same level as the surrounding area.

Sand down the entire hull with wet and dry, 240 grade to start with to get all the paint runs and brush marks out. Then apply two coats of Toplac using either small rollers with fine sponge or spray painting. Wait a few days for the paint to harden before gently sanding again with wet and dry with 600 grade. Then apply another two coats in the same way. If you get it right with no runs then you should not need to do any more but just let the paint fully harden.

To spray paint you need to thin the Toplac with Internationals No3 thinners to get the right viscocity. This gives a nice finish but you ned to be careful that you don't overspray as it will produce runs. (By the way don't spray over undercoat unless its had at least 2 days to harden.) I tried this but had problems and changed to roller but I would try spraying again but it needs practice.

I have found that thinning the paint works well for applying by roller as well and produces a very good finish.

Thank you very much for a comprehensive reply. Just to confirm - I can paint Toplac onto the old paint if it's prepared properly, I only need to undercoat where there is bare wood?

Thanks again.

There should be no problem with Toplac onto the old paint but if you are concerened about it then you should use Internationals undercoat (Pre-Kote)first. Certainly any wood needs undercoat at least unless it has been left bare for a while in which case you may even need to use primer then undercoat.
