I've just had a glance at the poll for this on the website. It's currently standing at 76.9 to 23.1 in favour of them.

As someone in favour of jury boats, I wonder what could be the reasons to not have them. I think there are 3 main reasons:

1. People don't believe cheating is prevalent enough to warrant them.
2. People don't think that clubs should be forced to provide this service
3. The people who are cheating are aware that jury boats would force them to stop cheating where as with self-policing they can get away with more as cheating is difficult to prove.

This last reason is quite cynical, and no one would ever admit to thinking this.

Have I missed some reasons here?

I quite like the enterprise sailors being the bad boys or girls of sailing. It sounds like were all in rock 'n' roll bands, Smoke and drink. Pushing rule 42(is that what its called.)Its wasn't a Ent sailor who wrote rule 42, was it? Another good way to stop the cheating is to protest. Have you got the nerve to.

I think it's very tough to distinguish between cheating and, say, efficient roll-tacking. I was taught to sail by Pete Lawson, and Pete often has "trouble" with Rule 42, but I don't think most of the fleet would consider him a cheat, or otherwise unsporting - he simply loves to win, and pushes Rule 42 to the limit - isn't that what we should all be doing?

I also look forward to being protested under Rule 42 - then I'll know I'm roll-tacking properly!

Do you think people know when they're cheating?

If they don't then jury boats are a good idea. If they know and they choose to cheat anyway, they're only cheating themselves. To win a race, or even a series cheating wouldn't give me the buzz I'm after, and I'm sure it wouldn't help them.

Enterprises (sadly) have a reputation of cheating, and maybe this is deserved. Jury boats would improve this reputation, but once removed would the cheaters return back to their old ways?

In the long term, they can only help, but in the short term, would it encourage people to cheat more when there are no jury boats on the water?

Err, No, I think you've got them all.

I don't think we can ask all the clubs to provide a jury boat as it means more People to be involde. I think it was great at Winsford and it proves how well behaved we can be. Not that any cheating goes on ;-)
